Although more than 84 (plus additional 5, which are extinct) completely different languages (with more than 200 dialects) are spoken in Ethiopia, Amharic is the official and national language of Ethiopia.

English is an international medium in Ethiopia. Schools teach all subjects in English commencing at grade school. Higher institutions conduct their teachings and researches in English. Banks conduct their businesses in English. Hence, English is the second language of Ethiopia.

Amharic is a derivative of Geez language, one of the ancient languages on earth and a family of the Semitic languages. Geez doesn't exist today in everyday language. However, Geez is still used as a liturgical language in Ethiopian churches and Synagogues.
