English is an international medium in Ethiopia. Schools teach all subjects in English commencing at grade school. Higher institutions conduct their teachings and researches in English. Banks conduct their businesses in English. Hence, English is the second language of Ethiopia.
Amharic is a family of the Semitic languages, which is similar to Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic, Maltese, Syrian, and other Middle Eastern languages.

Amharic is a derivative of Geez language, one of the ancient languages on earth and a family of the Semitic languages. Geez doesn't exist today in everyday language. However, Geez is still used as a liturgical language in Ethiopian churches and Synagogues. An example of Geez, which is the same characters as modern day Amharic, Tigrigna, and Guragigna is offered at the following website: www.ModernGeez.com

Among the Semitic languages speaking countries, Ethiopia is the only country with more than 20 different Semitic languages being spoken in the country.

The Last National Anthem of the Kingdom of Ethiopia (till 1974)

Ethiopia land of our fathers
the land where our God wants to be
like bees to a hive swiftly gather
God children are gathered to thee.
With our red, gold and green floating for us
and our Emperor to shield us from wrong
with our hope and our future before us
we hail and we chant and we sing
God bless our Negus, Negus I
who keeps Ethiopia free
to advance with truth and right, truth and right
to advance with love and light, love and light.
With righteousness pleading
we hail to our God and King.
Humanity pleading - one God for us all
Ethiopia the tyrants are falling
who once smote thee ´pon thy knee.
Thy children are heartically calling
Jahoviah - the great one has heard us.
He has come to protect us from wrong.
He has sent his holy angel to guide us
and to protect us in this time
who keeps Ethiopia free....
to advance with truth and right, truth and right
to advance with love and light, love and light.
With righteousness pleading
we hail to our God and King.
Humanity pleading - one God for us all
